DEUTSCH

ENGLISH

When populists such as Trump or Bolsonaro came to power, some of their initial steps have been to weaken environmental laws – in particular to crack down on forests, whether in Alaska or the Amazon. In the context of the Populist rollback, this may serve to signal to their voters that they are now abolishing the impositions of (as AfD sympathizers call it) “red-green-spit” milieus. This is often justified by job creation, even if more jobs are destroyed than created by logging measures–in tourism for instance. Once a jungle has been destroyed, it will scarcely come back; short-term effects cause lasting damage.

The soundinstallation “Angry Trees” from Morgenvogel Real Estate (Maria-Leena  Räihälä &Manuel Bonik) addresses such and other issues by letting the first victims of such populist measures speak for themselves: the trees. As part of Bring in Weight and Advent, it will be Christmas trees that express their thoughts on all this.
